Skeletal muscle fibres are classified into fibre types. Based upon histochemical staining, muscle fibres are now commonly distinguished as slow-twitch (ST), which stain dark or red, and fast-twitch (FT), which stain light or pale. Fast twitch muscle fibres can produce small amounts of energy very quickly whereas slow twitch muscles can produce large amounts of energy slowly.
