Taste receptors function as chemoreceptors that interact with taste stimuli or ligands. When food or other substances enter the mouth, molecules interact with saliva and are bound to taste receptors in the mouth and other locations, which results in taste perception. Because many taste ligands do not easily permeate cell membranes, taste receptors are believed to be a part of the taste receptor cell membranes.
